Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis seowon (Confucian academy) was built to house relics of Yi I, including his Gyeongmong yogyeol and Haedong yeonwollok. Yi I (1536–1584) was a leading scholar and statesman of the mid-Joseon period, ranked alongside Yi Hwang as one of the two great masters of the age. Okgyeseowon was first built in 1725, the third year of King Yeongjo, at Hyangok-dong, about 4km from its present site, but was closed down under the order of Heungseon Daewongun abolishing seowon academies. It was rebuilt in 1867, the sixth year of Emperor Gojong, 200m east of the village. The academy's buildings include a lecture hall, Sowonsa (a shrine hall), an inner three-bay gate, an outer three-bay gate, and a management building. The lecture hall measures four bays across the front and two bays in depth, and is covered with a hip-and-gable (paljak) roof that forms the shape of the character 八 (eight) when seen from the side. Sowonsa measures three bays across the front and two bays in depth, and is covered with a gabled (matbae) roof that forms the shape of the character 人 (person) when seen from the side.
