Magoksa Temple Guardian Gate
마곡사천왕문 · 麻谷寺天王門

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krMagoksa Temple is said to have been founded in 640, the 41st year of King Mu of Baekje, by the Venerable Jajang. Within the temple grounds many buildings remain, including the Guardian Gate, along with Daeungjeon Hall, Yeongsanjeon Hall, Daegwangbojeon Hall and Hongseongnu Pavilion. The Guardian Gate was built in the late Joseon period, and records preserved on the building indicate that it was repaired in 1910. The Guardian Gate, the second gate encountered from the temple entrance, measures three bays across the front and two bays to the side. Its roof is a gabled roof forming the shape of the character 人 (person) when viewed from the side. The ceiling is a yeondeung ceiling, in which the roof's timber frame is left exposed, and inside are statues and paintings of the Four Heavenly Kings, who guard the four cardinal directions.
