Standing Mireugam Hermitage Stone Buddha
미륵암석불입상 · 彌勒庵石佛立象

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krHyogi-ri, Ibaek-myeon, Namwon-si, Jeollanam-do is said to be the place where State Preceptor Doseon founded Mireugam Hermitage in the late Unified Silla period. Yeonhwasa Temple, built in 1946, now stands on the site. This standing stone Buddha has a round, broad face with a flat nose. The ears are rather long and set toward the back of the head, and the long neck clearly shows three folds, known as samdo, a conventional feature of Buddhist images. The robe drapes over both shoulders, and holes have been bored through both hands. Overall, the body appears simplified in comparison with the shoulders. The pedestal, carved with a lotus pattern, is a separate piece from the Buddha image itself. The halo, representing the light radiating from the Buddha's body, is an undecorated oval form shaped like a boat. Judging from the style of its carving, this standing stone Buddha is presumed to have been made during the Joseon period.
