Dosoram Hermitage, Tongyeong
통영 도솔암 · 統營 兜率庵

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krYonghwasa Temple is a time-honoured temple said to have been founded in the Silla period. Dosoram Hermitage was built in 943, the 26th year of King Taejo of Goryeo, by the Zen master Dosol, and a legend is told about this. While Dosol was practising austerities in a rock cave on Mireuksan Mountain, he grew close to a tiger, and one day the tiger carried a young woman there on its back and presented her to him. The master scolded the tiger and took the woman back to her home village, whereupon her father, wishing to repay his kindness, gave him 300 nyang (a traditional unit of currency), with which Dosol built Dosoram Hermitage. The rock cave still remains above the hermitage today. The present Dosoram Hermitage measures three bays across the front and two bays deep, and its roof is a hip-and-gable roof that forms the shape of the Chinese character for "eight" (八) when viewed from the side.
