Magoksa Temple is said to have been founded in 640, the 41st year of King Mu of Baekje, by the monk Jajang. Many buildings survive within the temple grounds, including Guksadang Shrine as well as Daeungjeon Hall, Yeongsanjeon Hall, Daegwangbojeon Hall and Hongseongnu Pavilion. Guksadang Shrine houses portraits of the temple's founder and of eminent monks, and was built to remind monks that becoming a guksa, the highest rank a monk can attain, requires great discipline and effort. It is also known as Josajeon, Josadang or Guksajeon.
