Hansansa Temple Site Three-story Stone Pagoda
한산사지삼층석탑 · 寒山寺址三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe pagoda stands amid a field at the entrance to Tapdong village, with Jongsan Mountain spreading out behind it as a backdrop. A temple called Hansansa is said to have stood here from ancient times, but it has since disappeared, leaving only this pagoda. The pagoda has a two-tiered base supporting the whole weight of the structure, topped by a three-story body, but its condition is poor, with some parts broken off and patched with cement. The base has a separately dressed stone standing like a pillar at each of its four corners, which is the pagoda's most distinctive feature. In the body of the pagoda, apart from the first-story body stone, which is made of two stones, the body stone and roof stone of each story are each carved from a single block. Each body stone has pillar shapes carved into its corners. The steeply sloping roof stones have three-tiered supports on their undersides, and the eaves are nearly horizontal, with the four corners lightly upturned to give a sense of lightness. The natural stone placed on top is not original, but was carved in a similar shape and set there at a later date. The pagoda presents a relatively large and imposing appearance, but from the second story upward the body stones and roof stones decrease sharply in size, reducing the sense of stability. Some of its features have become formulaic, suggesting that it is a work of the later Goryeo period.
