The Wonheung-ri Celadon Kiln Site is located on the eastern slope of Geonjisan Mountain in Goyang. Among the artefacts excavated here, most of the celadon is undecorated. The clay body used is relatively fine, and the glaze is dark green or yellowish-brown. To stop vessels sticking to the kiln floor or to each other, a thin layer of greyish-white refractory clay — clay that withstands high temperatures without melting — was placed as a foot support beneath each vessel, and there is also evidence of vessels being stacked and fired in layers. The kiln appears to have mainly produced bowls with outward-flaring rims, bowls with rolled rims, small cups, and jars. In particular, there are many pieces with high, outward-flaring feet, pieces with low, broad feet, cups close to the haemurigup type (a foot whose contact surface is as broad as a halo around the sun, common in the 10th–11th centuries when celadon and white porcelain were first made in Korea), and bowls without a circular mark on the interior base. Saggars were also used during firing to keep foreign matter from falling onto the vessels or vessels from sticking together; cylindrical and bowl-shaped saggar fragments, as well as low dish-shaped saggar supports, were excavated here. Judging from the characteristics of the celadon and kiln materials excavated at the Wonheung-dong celadon kiln site, it appears to have operated in the early period when ceramic production technology was first introduced to Korea, from the late 10th to the early 11th century.
