Magoksa Temple is said to have been founded in 640, the forty-first year of King Mu of Baekje, by the monk Jajang. Many buildings survive within the temple grounds, including Myeongbujeon Hall, Daeungjeon Hall, Yeongsanjeon Hall, Daegwangbojeon Hall and Hongseongnu Pavilion. Myeongbujeon Hall enshrines the Bodhisattva Kshitigarbha at its centre, flanked by the images of the Ten Kings of the Underworld, and is therefore also known as Jijangjeon Hall or Siwangjeon Hall. Kshitigarbha is charged with guiding and converting all of humankind, while the Ten Kings, among them King Yeomna, are the ten judges of the underworld.
