Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a seodang, a private Confucian study hall, built to commemorate Kim U-ong, whose pen name was Donggang. Kim U-ong (1540-1603) served as Minister of Personnel, Daejehak (head of the Office of Special Advisors) and royal lecturer under both King Myeongjong and King Seonjo of Joseon, and he also compiled a twenty-volume collection of his writings as well as a thirty-six-volume continuation of the Gangmok, a historical chronicle. The seodang was built in 1902, and in 1922 a repository called Goengjeonggak was constructed to house six hundred printing woodblocks of Kim U-ong's collected writings, which had previously been kept at Cheongju Seowon. The overall layout places the seodang, the space for study, at the front, with the shrine and the building housing the woodblocks arranged side by side behind it. The seodang measures five kan across the front and two kan along the side (a kan being the bay between structural columns), and its roof is a hip-and-gable roof, forming a shape like the Chinese character for "eight" when viewed from the side. The shrine, which bears a wooden plaque reading "Jeongwonsa," measures three kan across the front and two kan along the side, and likewise has a hip-and-gable roof.
