Goan-ri Buncheong Ware Island Kiln Site, Yongin
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

The Goan-ri buncheong ware kiln site is located on the southern slope of a low hill south of the Jinae village in Baegam-myeon, and was first discovered around 1975. The kiln site runs north to south, measuring about 15 m in width and 30 m in length, on the slope of the hill. Pine and oak trees grow on the hillside above, and because the kiln site itself and its surroundings are now occupied by a number of graves, it is difficult to gauge the full original extent of the remains. The kiln deposits exposed on the surface reveal large quantities of buncheong ware sherds, fragments of the kiln wall, and kiln waste. The buncheong ware found here is mostly plain or decorated using the sanggam (inlay) and inhwa (stamped) techniques, in a dark greenish-grey colour, and consists mainly of everyday vessel types such as bal and daejeop bowls and jeopsi dishes, with smaller quantities of ritual vessels, jars and bottles. The bal and daejeop bowls have full, rounded bodies that curve in an "S" shape before flaring slightly at the rim, giving them an overall sturdy appearance. The Goan-ri kiln site, which produced sanggam- and inhwa-technique buncheong ware, is thought to have operated in the mid-to-late fifteenth century, before the official royal kiln (bunwon) began operating in Gwangju.
