Standing Mireugam Hermitage Stone Buddha
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is a Buddha statue, 192 cm in total height, standing in Mireugam Hermitage in Noam-dong, Namwon, Jeollanam-do. Small snail-shell-shaped curls are attached to the head, above which rises a topknot-shaped hair bun. On the neck are three curved lines, the samdo, a traditional mark of the Buddha's attainment, and behind the statue is a boat-shaped halo. The upper left portion and about a third of the right side are now broken away and missing; the halo is carved with flame patterns. The pedestal on which the statue stands is a square block of granite, on which is carved in relief a band of downward-facing lotus petals. Since the statue's feet are not represented, the statue and the pedestal feel like two separate stones. Judging from its overall appearance, the work is presumed to have been made in the Goryeo period.
