Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDaerichilchunggak Pavilion was built in 1876, the thirteenth year of Emperor Gojong, to honour the loyalty of seven brothers of the Im clan of Pyeongtaek, who rose in righteous resistance at Hwasun during the Byeongja War of 1636, the fourteenth year of King Injo. The brothers who rose at that time were Im Si-gye, Im Si-tae, Im Si-min, Im Si-un, Im Si-jun, Im Si-ik and Im Si-yak. Together with the righteous militia of Hwasun, the brothers advanced as far as Cheongju, but on hearing that King Injo had surrendered to Emperor Taizong of Qing, they lamented their failure to serve the country faithfully, returned to their hometown and lived out their lives in seclusion. Later, in the late Joseon period, in 1876, the thirteenth year of Emperor Gojong, their loyalty was highly esteemed and official rank was conferred on them: Im Si-gye was given the post of Third Counsellor of the Ministry of Rites (senior third rank); Im Si-tae, Left Royal Secretary; Im Si-min, Third Counsellor of the Ministry of Rites; Im Si-un, Third Counsellor of the Ministry of Taxation; Im Si-jun, Left Royal Secretary; Im Si-ik, Left Royal Secretary; and Im Si-yak, Third Counsellor of the Ministry of Taxation. It was ordered that Chilchunggak Pavilion be built in their honour. The building measures seven kan across the front and one kan to the side, with a hip-and-gable roof shaped like the character 八 when seen from the side. The bracket sets supporting the eaves are built in the jusimpo style, with brackets placed only above the columns.
