Magoksa Temple is said to have been founded in 640, the forty-first year of King Mu of Baekje, by the monk Jajang. Within its grounds survive many buildings, including Eungjinjeon Hall, Daeungjeon Hall, Yeongsanjeon Hall, Daegwangbojeon Hall and Hongseongnu Pavilion. Haetalmun Gate is the main entrance to Magoksa Temple. Passing through this gate is said to mark a passage out of the secular world and into the world of Buddhism, inspiring in the visitor the resolve to seek liberation. On either side of the central passageway are enshrined statues of Vajra guardian warriors and a statue of the child form of the bodhisattva Manjushri.
