Ssangbongsa Temple is said to have been founded in 868, the eighth year of King Gyeongmun of Unified Silla, when the Seon master Cheolgam returned from China and, struck by the scenic beauty of the site, built the temple there. Geungnakjeon Hall has a frontage of three bays and a depth of three bays, with a gable roof that, seen from the side, takes the shape of the character 人 (meaning "person"). The bracket sets supporting and ornamenting the eaves are built in the dapo style, with brackets set not only above the columns but also between them. The ceiling is a coffered ceiling, concealing the space above in a grid pattern like the character 井 (meaning "well"), and the floor is laid with wooden flooring. The windows are fitted with double hinged doors.
