Bodeokgak Pavilion was built to protect a bulmangbi — a stele of undying gratitude — commemorating the achievements and virtue of General Gwak Jae-u. In 1592, the twenty-fifth year of King Seonjo of Joseon, when the Japanese invasions (Imjin War) broke out, Gwak Jae-u steeled his resolve to face the invaders and spent his entire fortune to raise a righteous army, a volunteer militia. He became its commander and repelled the Japanese forces, beginning in the Uiryeong region and going on to Changnyeong, Hapcheon, and Seongju. In 1739, the fifteenth year of King Yeongjo, a bulmangbi was erected on this former battlefield to commemorate the general's achievements and his devotion to his country and people.
