This seowon (Confucian academy) was built to honour the achievements of Ju Se-bung, pen name Sinjae. Ju Se-bung (1495–1554) was a civil official and scholar of the early Joseon period. He mainly held posts in scholarly institutions such as the Hongmungwan (Office of Special Advisers) and the Seonggyungwan (National Confucian Academy), and as a local magistrate he worked to promote education and moral instruction. Deogyeonseowon was first established in 1591, the 24th year of King Seonjo, as Dongnimseowon. It was rebuilt in 1660, the first year of King Hyeonjong, at Namgo in Chilwon-hyeon, and renamed Namgoseowon. In 1676, the 2nd year of King Sukjong, it received the name "Deogyeon" by royal grant and became a sa'aek seowon, an academy granted its name and a plaque by the throne. It was later closed in 1868, the 5th year of Emperor Gojong, under the Heungseon Daewongun's order abolishing seowon, and was rebuilt again in 1964. The buildings within the academy grounds are the lecture hall (gangdang), Jondeoksa Shrine and Deogyeonbyeolsa Shrine. The gangdang, the space used for education, is five bays wide and two bays deep, its roof an ornate hip-and-gable (paljak) form that traces the shape of the character "eight" (八) when seen from the side. Jondeoksa is three bays wide and two bays deep, with a gable (matbae) roof forming the shape of the character "person" (人) when seen from the side; inside it enshrines the spirit tablet of Ju Se-bung. Deogyeonbyeolsa, to the right of Jondeoksa, enshrines the spirit tablets of five worthies known as the Samchil Seonhyeon. A memorial rite is held at the academy every year in the third lunar month.
