Tapgol Park occupies the site where Heungboksa Temple stood during the Goryeo dynasty and Wongaksa Temple during the Joseon dynasty. During the Korean Empire a gate was built here and the site was developed as Pagoda Park, Seoul's first urban park. The Former Tapgol Park Jeongmun Gate is presumed to have been built between 1910 and 1913. During the park's renovation in 1967 it was relocated (the move was carried out in 1969) to serve as the main gate of the Seoul National University College of Law, and it is now used as the main gate of the elementary school attached to the university's College of Education.
