Dolmens are the representative tombs of the Bronze Age, generally believed to be the burial places of a ruling class with economic wealth or political power. A dolmen typically consists of a huge capstone exposed above ground, beneath which lie supporting stones, a burial precinct, and a burial chamber, though the form varies greatly by region and period. Such tombs are commonly classified into the table type, in which the burial chamber sits above ground, and the baduk-board type (also called the go-board type), in which it lies underground. The Maengni Dolmen stands on flat ground at the foot of a slope in a valley formed between Geonjisan Mountain (411m above sea level) and Sujeongsan Mountain (344m above sea level). At present only the capstone is exposed above ground; it has split down the middle into two halves, presumably broken deliberately so that it could be reused in a later period. The capstone is of granite, measuring 3.36m in length and 3.08m in width, with a roughly square outline. Its upper surface bears twenty-seven cup-marks, 3 to 17cm in diameter. Various views hold that it may be a capstone type, baduk-board type, or table type, but because no excavation has been carried out, its precise structure cannot be determined.
