A hyanggyo is a local Confucian school established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages and to educate and edify the local populace. The exact date of Sunchang Hyanggyo's original construction is not known, but it is thought to have been built during the reign of King Seongjong (r. 1469–1494). The buildings that survive today include Daeseongjeon Hall along with Dongmu and Seomu, Myeongnyundang Hall (the lecture hall), Dongjae and Seojae (the east and west dormitories), and the inner and outer three-bay gates. Daeseongjeon Hall measures three bays across the front and three bays to the side, with a gable roof that, seen from the side, forms the shape of the character 人 (person). Inside are enshrined the spirit tablets of Confucius and other sages. During the Joseon period the school received land, servants and books from the state to educate its students, but today its educational function has ceased and only its function of holding memorial rites remains.
