Gwibu and Isu at Taejasa Temple Site
Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr · no licence stated

This is part of a stele standing beside a field to the left of the now-closed Taeja Branch School, and is presumed to be a relic of the old Taejasa Temple that once stood on this site. The stele is said to have belonged to Great Master Nanggong, a monk of the late Unified Silla period, but today only the pedestal (gwibu) and capstone (isu) survive, the body of the stele itself having been lost. The gwibu, in the form of a crouching tortoise set on a square base stone, is so worn all over that its original appearance can no longer be made out. The isu placed on top of the pedestal is carved all over with cloud patterns, and at the centre of its front face is a square space prepared for an inscription giving the name of the stele. Judging from the carving technique and form, it is thought to date from the early Goryeo period.
