Hwasanyeongdang Hall
화산영당 · 華山影堂

This shrine was built in 1832, the thirty-second year of King Sunjo of Joseon, by Jeong Gyu-han's disciples and Confucian scholars to enshrine his portrait. Jeong Gyu-han (1750–1824) was a scholar of the late Joseon period whose pen names were Hwasan and Unsusanin. He passed the state examination in 1780, the fourth year of King Jeongjo, but had no ambition for office and did not enter government service, devoting himself instead to the study of Neo-Confucianism. He was fond of mountains, rivers and nature, and was also well known as a man of letters for his love of poetry and prose. His writings are gathered in the Hwasanjip. His tomb lies behind the shrine that holds his portrait, and in 1962 Confucian scholars and his descendants built Hwasansa Shrine centred on this building.
