Yeongseokjae Hall
영석재 · 永錫齋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis building was erected by descendants to commemorate Yi Seung, pen name Cheonggang (1556–1628). It is said that about 300 years ago descendants of the Incheon Yi clan took the lead in building it on its present site. The complex consists of a lecture hall, a shrine, an inner three-bay gate, a gatehouse and a caretaker's house. The lecture hall, called Yeongseokjae, stands at the centre, while the shrine is enclosed separately within its own wall. The gatehouse stands in front of the lecture hall, and the caretaker's house and storehouse are set to the lower right. The lecture hall measures five bays across the front and two bays deep, and its roof is a hip-and-gable roof forming a figure-eight (八) shape when viewed from the side. The present building was newly built in 1912. The shrine, which enshrines the spirit tablets of nine people centred on Yi Seung, was built in 1962. It measures three bays across the front and one and a half bays deep, and its roof is a gable roof shaped like the character for 'person' (人) when viewed from the side.
