Standing Ipyeong-ri Stone Buddha
이평리석불입상 · 泥坪里石佛立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a Buddha statue enshrined at the entrance to Ipyeong-ri village. The lower half of the body has completely disappeared and does not survive. Even the surviving upper half is so badly worn that its details are difficult to make out. On the head, a faint trace remains of the ushnisha (a topknot-shaped bun of hair), and the oval face is likewise too worn at the surface for its details to be discerned. The neck is short, but traces remain of the three curved lines symbolising the Buddha's wisdom. A thick robe is draped over both shoulders, and its hem falls in a long, drooping U-shape down the front of the torso. On the exposed chest, a horizontal skirt-line appears to survive faintly. Both arms are held close to the body: the right hand hangs straight down, though its gesture cannot be determined, while the left hand is held in front of the abdomen. From the shoulders sloping to the left, the thick and simply rendered drapery folds, and the lack of volume in the chest, the statue is judged to be a Buddhist image of the Goryeo period. However, despite the loss of detail, the face as a whole gives an impression of plump volume, and the rounded shoulders together with the thick, simply but fluidly rendered drapery folds raise the possibility that the statue was in fact made at a date even earlier than the Goryeo period.
