Historic House in Bukssang-ri, Yeongwol
영월 북쌍리 고택 · 寧越 北雙里 古宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe exact date of construction is unknown, but the house is said to be more than 100 years old. It has a square (ㅁ-shaped) layout comprising the main quarters (anchae), the men's quarters (sarangchae) and a shed. The roof of the main quarters is a hipped-and-gabled roof which, seen from the side, resembles the Chinese character for "eight" (八). A distinctive feature is that only the columns of the daecheong, the central wooden-floored hall, are thick and round; with the daecheong at the centre, a side room is placed to the right, and the main room and kitchen are set at a right angle to the left. The sarangchae has a straight (一-shaped) plan, three bays wide and one bay deep, consisting of a wooden-floored room, a men's room and the main gate, with a wide veranda installed in front of the rooms. To the left of the main gate is a two-bay men's room, with a veranda laid in front of it. The shed was added later, and in style the house follows the typical traditional folk house form of the Yeongseo region.
