Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krHaengju Confucian Academy Site is the location of a seowon, a Confucian academy, built to honour the loyalty of Gwon Yul (1537–1599), a renowned general of the mid-Joseon period. The academy was built in 1842 by royal order. Gwon Yul led the Joseon forces to victory in the Battle of Haengju (1593), in which Joseon troops under his command, together with civilians, repelled the Japanese army during the Japanese invasions of Korea. At the time the academy was built, its outer gate was named "Haengju Seowon" and its shrine was named "Gigongsa". Haengju Seowon survived Emperor Gojong's abolition of Confucian academies, in 1871, when all but forty-seven academies and shrines nationwide were abolished, but it is said to have burned down during the Korean War. It was subsequently restored in the 1970s and relocated, together with the Haengju Victory Monument, inside Haengjusanseong Fortress, where it was renamed "Chungjangsa". In the 1980s, restoration work to recover its original appearance was undertaken by the government and descendants; the lecture hall was restored in 1988 and the shrine in 1997, when it was renamed Gigongsa as before. The inner gate and the surrounding wall were completed in 1998, and the ritual preparation hall the following year, so that the academy regained the appearance of its former self.
