This is the stele of Kim Hyo-seong (1585–1665), a civil official of the mid-Joseon period. In 1613, the fifth year of King Gwanghaegun, he passed the state examination to become a saengwon (a licentiate in the Confucian classics). When Jeong Jo, Yun In and Yi Wi-gyeong, acting on the instigation of Yi I-cheom, sought to harm Queen Dowager Inmok, Kim submitted a memorial calling for their execution, for which he was exiled to Gilju and later moved to Jindo Island. After the Injo Restoration he regained office, serving as a dosa (an investigating officer) of the Uigeumbu, the State Tribunal, then as magistrate of Cheongan County, and subsequently as busa (prefect) of Namwon and Jukssan and as moksa (magistrate) of Gongju and Cheongju. Throughout his long career in provincial posts he governed the people with benevolence, and was renowned as an incorruptible and upright local magistrate.
