This is a seowon (a private Confucian academy) built to honour the scholarship and virtuous conduct of Son Gi-yang (1559–1619). Son Gi-yang was a scholar during the reign of King Seonjo of Joseon (r. 1567–1608) who raised a righteous army during the Japanese invasions of 1592–1598 and served the country with loyalty, devoting his later years to scholarship. It was first built in 1743, the 19th year of King Yeongjo, as Jinam Seodang, a village school, and in 1844, the tenth year of King Heonjong, Cheongjeolsa Shrine was erected to enshrine his spirit tablet, after which the academy came to be called Chiltanseowon. It was later closed under the order of Heungseon Daewongun abolishing seowon, and was restored in 1914. The grounds contain Cheongjeolsa Shrine, a lecture hall, east and west chambers, a gate tower, an inner three-gate and a caretaker's quarters. Cheongjeolsa Shrine enshrines the spirit tablet of Son Gi-yang, and memorial rites are held there every March and September. The east chamber, known as Junggangjae, served as lodgings, while the west chamber, known as Byeongnipjae, was where students studied. The caretaker's quarters were used by the person responsible for guarding the academy.
