Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krIhaeryong Old House is a late-Joseon building standing in a village near a valley south of Seounsan Mountain in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province. A ridge-beam inscription (sangnyangmun) recorded in the main hall (anchae) confirms that the main hall and the men's quarters (sarangchae) were built in 1797, the twenty-first year of King Jeongjo. The house faces south-west and is made up of a main hall, a men's quarters and a servants' quarters (haengnangchae). It fronts directly onto the road, and the house is entered through a gate set within the eight-bay servants' quarters. Ihaeryong Old House is notable for joining the main hall and the men's quarters into a single building to take advantage of their structural connection, while orienting them in different directions to create separate courtyards for the men's and women's quarters, a spatial arrangement that distinguishes male and female space within the home. The way the main beams, pillars and other timbers are finished also preserves forms found in traditional houses of the late 1700s, giving the house considerable heritage value.
