Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krJangdam Chungsingak is a chungsinmun, a commemorative gate honouring a loyal subject, erected in a clan village of the Indong Jang family to honour Jang Dam, who rendered meritorious service suppressing Yi Injwa's Rebellion. It was originally erected in 1729, the fifth year of King Yeongjo, in fields then under rice cultivation at Cheongnyong-ri, Cheongan-myeon, and was later relocated to Jocheon-ri. Jangdam Chungsingak is said to have been moved to its present site about forty years ago, in the late 1960s, but it still preserves its traditional form well: a wooden, tile-roofed building with a straight gabled (matbae) roof, its short round pillars set on tall, stone pillar-shaped bases. It is a one-bay by one-bay gabled wooden tile-roofed building, with short round pillars raised on tall stone pillar-shaped bases; features such as these bases and the two-tier bracket (iikgong) brackets show that the gate is furnished with the formal dignity befitting a jeongnyeo, a memorial gate of this kind. Inside hangs a plaque reading, in translation, 'Gate of the Loyal Subject Jang Dam of Indong, First-Class Merit Subject among the Loyal Followers of the Military Pacification, posthumously conferred the ranks of Tongjeong Daebu and Left Deputy Director of the Royal Secretariat, concurrently Participant Officer of the Royal Lecture,' together with a 'Record of Relocation and Repair.' On the front hang the plaques 'Chungsinmun' (Gate of the Loyal Subject) and 'Baekse Supung' (Virtue Handed Down for a Hundred Generations), and the gate is surrounded by a protective fence. Jang Dam (d. 1728), whose pen name was Supungjeong, was of the Indong Jang clan and a descendant of Jang In-gye, who held the office of Tongnye. When Yi Injwa's Rebellion broke out in Cheongju in 1728, the fourth year of King Yeongjo, Jang Dam, though holding no office and living as a cheosa, a scholar who had withdrawn from public life, raised a righteous army to suppress the rebellion and died a martyr's death in the fighting; his younger brother, Jang Hwan, then led the remaining troops to subjugate the enemy and avenge him. This was later reported to the throne, and he was honoured with a jeongnyeo as a loyal subject and recorded as a First-Class Merit Subject among the Loyal Followers of the Military Pacification; during the reign of King Jeongjo, an order was given to commend his loyalty, and he was posthumously conferred the post of Jwaseungji, Left Deputy Director of the Royal Secretariat.
