Jeongeup Local Confucian School Daeseongjeon Hall
정읍향교대성전 · 井邑鄕校大成殿

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA hyanggyo (local Confucian school) is an educational institution established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages, and to educate and morally instruct the local populace. The exact date when Jeongeup Hyanggyo was first built is not known, but in 1638, the sixteenth year of King Injo, local Confucian scholars relocated it to its present site. It has since undergone eight rounds of repair to take on its present form. Daeseongjeon Hall enshrines the spirit tablets of Confucius and of Confucian scholars from China and Korea, and is where memorial rites are held for them. It measures three kan across the front and three kan to the side, and has a gable roof that forms the shape of the character 人 (person) when viewed from the side. During the Joseon period the school received land, servants and books from the state to teach students, but today its educational role has disappeared and only its function of holding memorial rites remains. It holds a large collection of books, which provide valuable material for research into local history.
