This house illustrates the traditional residential life of a wealthy farming family in Gyeonggi Province. It originally belonged to the Jeonju Choe clan, but passed to the Namyang Hong clan, which is how it came to be known as the Hongseungin Old House. The anchae (main women's quarters), built on an L-shaped (giyeok-shaped) plan, and the sarangchae (men's quarters) face one another to form an open, U-shaped layout. Buildings, walls and a jungmun (middle gate) are used to separate the inner courtyard, the sarang courtyard and the outer courtyard, achieving a clear division of domestic space. A nine-kan (bay) haengnangchae, a row of servants' quarters, marks the boundary of the house, which is also fitted with a sotdaemun, a raised central gate. The sangnyangmun, ridge-beam inscriptions, in the daecheong halls of the anchae and sarangchae show that the anchae was built in 1807 and the sarangchae in 1810. Both buildings were raised on a substantial scale, but the sarangchae's front section was made especially large, at seven kan, reflecting the late Joseon tendency to build the sarangchae — the space of the male head of household used for ancestral rites and receiving guests — on a grander scale than the anchae. Fine woodwork and latticed windows show the care taken in its construction.
