A hyanggyo is a local Confucian school established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages and to educate and edify the local population. Taein Local Confucian School is said to have originally stood to the west of its present site in 1421, the third year of King Sejong, though it is not known when it was relocated to its current location. The surviving buildings are Daeseongjeon Hall, Myeongnyundang Hall, Manhwaru Pavilion, Jangsujae, Yangsajae, Samajae and Jeonjiksa. Daeseongjeon Hall enshrines the spirit tablets of Confucius and other sages and is where memorial rites are held. It measures three bays across the front and three bays to the side, and its roof is a gable roof shaped, when seen from the side, like the Chinese character 人 (person). In the Joseon period the state provided land, slaves and books to support the school's teaching, but today its educational function has disappeared and only its memorial-rite function remains.
