This is a seowon, a Confucian academy, built to commemorate Seo Ik, pen name Manjukheon. Seo Ik (1542–1587) passed the state examination in 1569 (the second year of King Seonjo) and rose to the post of magistrate of Uiju, but was dismissed from office after defending Yi I and Jeong Cheol, who had been impeached, and returned to his hometown. This academy was built in 1867 (the fourth year of Emperor Gojong's reign). As two gingko trees stood in front of it, it was named "Haengnimseowon," and the spirit tablet of Seo Ik, until then enshrined and incensed at Hyoamseowon in Sanno-ri, was moved here. It was later closed under the academy abolition decree of Heungseon Daewongun, but was rebuilt in 1926, when Yi So was additionally enshrined. The shrine measures three kan across the front and two kan to the side, its roof built in the gabled form that resembles the character "person" (人) when seen from the side. Within the grounds stands a stele commemorating Seo Ik's achievements, and memorial rites are held in the third and ninth lunar months.
