Yeonam Lecture Hall
여남강당 · 汝南講堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the lecture hall of Yeonamseowon Confucian Academy, built to honour Nam Min, founding ancestor of the Yeongyang Nam clan. Nam Min was travelling as an envoy of Tang China to Japan when, on his return voyage, he was caught in a typhoon and swept into Silla. With the consent of Emperor Hyeonjong of Tang, he received the land of Yeongyang from King Gyeongdeok of Silla and settled there, and so became the clan's founder. A shrine called Hyanghyeonsa was first built to enshrine Nam Min, and in 1830, the thirtieth year of King Sunjo, a lecture hall, east and west dormitories, and a gate pavilion were added, forming Yeonamseowon Confucian Academy. The academy was later closed under the order of Heungseon Daewongun abolishing Confucian academies; all its other buildings were destroyed, leaving only the lecture hall, which came to be known as Yeonam Lecture Hall. The lecture hall measures four bays across the front and two bays to the side, and is roofed with a hipped-and-gabled roof that takes the shape of the character 八, meaning "eight," when viewed from the side.
