Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSeongok-ri in Samseung-myeon is a clan village of the Hwasun Choe lineage. This house is said to have been built before Choe Dong-geun was born, and besides the anchae (main hall) and byeolchae (annex) that survive today, it was once a large house that also had a sarangchae (men's quarters) and various outbuildings. Numerous heritage sites lie in the surrounding area, including the Choe Hyeok-jae House, the Choe Tae-ha House, the Choe Jae-han House and Geumhwa Seowon, a Confucian academy. The house stands at the entrance to Seongok-ri village, adjoining the village access road, with the anchae and byeolchae set on an extensive plot of land. Having been unoccupied for a long time, the anchae has suffered severe damage to its roof and other parts, while the byeoldang is well preserved with no change to its internal structure; the surrounding land is now used as farmland. The anchae has a single-eaved, hipped-and-gabled (paljak) roof and a straight, ilja-shaped plan (shaped like the character 一) measuring six-and-a-half kan across the front and two-and-a-half kan to the side. The central kan has an umulmaru, a wooden floor laid in a well-frame pattern, with one kan to its left and two kan to its right, and a toe-kan (narrow eave-side bay) added across the front; the front pillars are round in section. In the loft above the kitchen, the exposed structural timbers clearly show the individual members and their joinery. The byeolchae has a single-eaved paljak roof and a straight, ilja-shaped plan measuring four kan across the front and one kan to the side; a kitchen was added on the right in brick construction, and a toe was placed at the front to form a narrow veranda floor (toenmaru). In particular, the mangsae (ridge-end finial tile) and mangwa (ridge-end roof tile) bear inscriptions that allow the date of the house to be determined, making them important evidence for tracing its history. The Choe Dong-geun House stands in an area adjoining the Choe Hyeok-jae House. Its anchae was recently repaired but was originally built around a hundred years ago and still retains its roof tiles intact, while the adjoining byeoldang preserves its timber members, roof tiles, ridge-end tiles and hip-rafter tiles in their original form. In particular, the ridge-end tiles and hip-rafter tiles of the byeoldang roof survive in their old form, making this house, related to other local heritage houses such as the Choe Tae-ha House, a valuable resource for research into traditional dwellings in the Boeun region.
