This Confucian academy honours Jo Gwangjo, styled Jeongam, together with Choe Huijeong, styled Deokchon; it was built in 1960 by local Confucian scholars. Jo Gwangjo (1482-1519) was a civil official and Neo-Confucian scholar of the early Joseon period. Inheriting the scholarly lineage of Kim Jong-jik, he became a central figure of the Sarim faction and carried out radical reforms. He was exiled on false charges levelled by the opposing Hungu faction and perished in the Gimyo Purge of 1519. Choe Huijeong studied under Jo Gwangjo and passed the military examination in 1516, the eleventh year of King Jungjong. When the Jurchen invaded Hamgyeong-do at that time, he was recommended by Jo Gwangjo and won a great victory over the invaders. In recognition of this achievement, King Jungjong is said to have granted him the land on which the academy now stands.
