A hyanggyo is a local Confucian school established by the state to hold rites for Confucius and other sages and to educate and edify the local populace. The exact date of the founding of Haenam Local Confucian School is unknown, but it appears to date from the Goryeo period. It was relocated to its present site in 1482, the thirteenth year of King Seongjong of Joseon, and has since been repaired several times. The buildings follow the "hall of learning in front, shrine behind" layout: Daeseongjeon Hall and the inner three-gate, Naesammun, stand at the rear, with Myeongnyundang lecture hall at the front on the same axis, flanked by east and west dormitories. Daeseongjeon Hall measures three bays across the front and three bays to the side, roofed with a gable roof that forms the shape of the character 人, meaning "person," when viewed from the side. Inside are enshrined the spirit tablets of Confucius and other Confucian scholars of China and Korea. During the Joseon period, the state provided land, slaves and books to support the teaching of students, but today the educational function has disappeared, leaving only the function of performing rites.
