Sunae-dong House
수내동가옥 · 數內洞家屋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSunae-dong House was the residence of Yi Taek-gu, one of the houses belonging to the Hansan Yi clan. Until the 1980s, Sunae-dong was a clan village where some thirty households of the Hansan Yi lived together. With the construction of Bundang new town, most of the houses were demolished, and only this one survives, now standing within the new town's Jungang Park. The house is thatched throughout. A long, single-row gate quarters (munganchae) faces the outer yard, and behind it an L-shaped main house (anchae) is arranged around an inner courtyard. In the main house, to the right of the central wooden-floored hall (daecheong) is a one-bay room across the hall (geonneonbang), and to the left are two bays of the main bedroom (anbang) set in a row. The kitchen and storeroom branch off in front of the main bedroom. This spatial arrangement is characteristic of houses in Gyeonggi Province. This house preserves the historical trace of the Hansan Yi clan village that once gathered in the Sunae-dong area, and together with its zelkova tree and pond it is a memorial building recording the area's appearance before new-town development. Although thatched, its structural members are relatively sound and the timber neatly finished, showing well the character of a late-Joseon Gyeonggi-region house built in the late 19th century.
