Geumgokseowon Confucian Academy was built to honour the loyalty of Manchidang Kim Su-nam (1576–1636). Kim Su-nam was a civil official of the mid-Joseon period who followed the royal court in fleeing to Ganghwado Island during the Japanese invasions of 1592–1598, but died for his principles when enemy troops invaded the island. The academy was founded in 1687, the 13th year of King Sukjong, at Jojeong-ri in Gayagok-myeon by Song Si-yeol and Song Jun-gil, and was moved to its present site in 1690, the 16th year of King Sukjong. In 1781, the fifth year of King Jeongjo, the spirit tablets of Maejukheon Seong Sam-mun and Songjae Jo Gye-myeong were additionally enshrined there. The academy was later demolished in 1868, the fifth year of Emperor Gojong, under Heungseon Daewongun's edict abolishing private Confucian academies; an altar was then set up to continue the rites, until a shrine hall was built in 1977, which stands today. In the shrine hall where the spirit tablets are enshrined, memorial rites are held every year on the third day of the third lunar month and the ninth day of the ninth lunar month.
