Chang East and West Temple is a seowon, a Confucian academy, built to honour Huchang Kim Taek-sul (1884–1954). Kim Taek-sul studied under Ganjae Jeon U and was a scholar of the modern era distinguished in Confucian learning and literary composition; during the Japanese colonial period his thoroughgoing anti-Japanese convictions made him a target of surveillance. Chang East and West Temple was built in 1965 by local Confucian scholars of the region and stands today. Within its grounds are a shrine hall enshrining the spirit tablet, a lecture hall, a caretaker's house, and an inner and an outer three-bay gate. It preserves many books, including manuscript and lithograph-print editions of the Huchangjip, the collected writings of Kim Taek-sul.
