Wolsandaegun Shrine
월산대군사당 · 月山大君祠堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Wolsandaegun Shrine enshrines the spirit tablet of Prince Wolsan, Yi Jeong (1454–1488), the elder brother of King Seongjong of the Joseon dynasty. Prince Wolsan was the eldest son of King Deokjong and elder brother of King Seongjong; he was appointed daegun, a senior first-rank title granted to royal relatives, in 1471. He is said to have loved learning and been even-tempered from an early age, and to have written many fine literary works out of his love of landscapes. Records show that the shrine was first built in 1756. The present building was rebuilt in 1875 and measures three bays across the front and three bays along the side. The roof is a gable roof, forming the shape of the character 人 (person) when viewed from the side. A toengan, an extra bay formed by a row of pillars set outside the main columns, runs across the front of the shrine and is left open, in consideration of its function for ancestral rites. A distinctive feature is that the central front bay is wide while the bays on either side are narrower by comparison. At the entrance to the shrine stands a raised-centre triple gate, whose central gate roof is set one level higher than the two side gates, and the shrine is enclosed by a wall. Unusually for the wall of a private shrine, its lower courses are built of long, finely dressed stones, and it has the unusual feature of stone drainage outlets built into the wall.
