Dogyeseowon Confucian Academy honours Yi Hui-maeng, Kim Je-min, Choe An and Kim Ji-su, together with Kim Je-an, Kim Heun, Kim Seom and Kim Seup. Yi Hui-maeng was a civil official of the early Joseon period and a disciple of Kim Jong-jik, recognised for his literary skill and character even while he was a student at the Seonggyungwan; he passed the state examination in first place in 1492, the 23rd year of King Seongjong, entered government service and went on to hold a succession of official posts. Kim Je-min (1527–1599) was a disciple of Yi Hang; he passed the state examination and entered official life, and during the Japanese invasions of 1592–1598 he raised righteous-army troops and distinguished himself in battle against the Japanese forces. The academy was founded in 1673, the 14th year of King Hyeonjong, to honour Yi Hui-maeng and Kim Je-min together with Choe An, a righteous-army commander of the mid-Joseon period, and Kim Ji-su, a civil official of the mid-Joseon period. The spirit tablet of Kim Je-an was later added in 1697, the 23rd year of King Sukjong, and that of Kim Heun in 1840, the sixth year of King Heonjong. In 1868, the fifth year of Emperor Gojong, the academy was demolished under Heungseon Daewongun's edict abolishing private Confucian academies, but it was rebuilt in 1962, when the spirit tablets of Kim Seom and Kim Seup were also enshrined. The grounds today include a shrine hall housing the spirit tablets, a lecture hall, east and west dormitories, a spirit gate, a caretaker's house and an outer gate. Memorial rites are held at the shrine hall every September.
