Seokcheon Village School is where Yi Si-myeong (pen name Seokgye, 1590-1674) lived together with his four sons. Yi Si-myeong was a scholar of the late Joseon period who passed the lower state examination (sogwa) but abandoned his official career amid the turmoil of state affairs, retiring into seclusion to devote himself to educating the next generation. This site was once home to Seokgye Chodang, the thatched cottage where he lived in seclusion with his four sons; his descendants built the present village school here in the thirty-first year of King Sunjo (1831), and it was renovated in the twenty-eighth year of Emperor Gojong (1891), reaching its present form. The school's storehouse holds woodblocks for the Collected Works of Seokgye, the Collected Works of Hangjae and the Yeongcheonjip.
