Yangyang Jo Gyu-seung House
양양조규승가옥 · 襄陽曺圭承家屋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe house was built by the tenth-generation ancestor of the present owner and has a square, ㅁ-shaped plan divided into an inner quarters (anchae) and an outer quarters (sarangchae). It appears that, at the time of construction, the building now used as the sarangchae was built first, followed by the anchae. The anchae measures five bays across the front and two bays along the side, with a hipped-and-gabled roof that, seen from the side, forms the shape of the character 八 (eight). Rooms and a kitchen are arranged on either side of a broad wooden-floored hall at the centre. The sarangchae has three rooms set in the middle, with a wooden veranda along the front; a kitchen and a storeroom are placed on either side of the veranda. To gain more space, the storeroom projects forward, its front raised in the form of a pavilion floor, with a veranda in front of the rooms. Because the house has a square, enclosed layout, it has an inner courtyard closed off on all sides; besides the main entrance, there is also a narrow door between the across-room and the lower sarang quarters, used as a small secondary entrance. The exact date of construction is not known, but the house is estimated to be around 300 years old.
