Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krNamakjeong Pavilion belonged to Yi Hyeon-il (pen name Garam, 1627-1704), a Neo-Confucian scholar who inherited the scholarly tradition of Yi Hwang (pen name Toegye) and was active during the reign of King Sukjong (r. 1674-1720). Yi Hyeon-il gave up his official career to devote himself to scholarship, and built the original two-bay thatched cottage in the second year of King Sukjong (1676); his descendants rebuilt it as a tiled-roof building in the twenty-second year of King Sunjo (1822). The building measures four bays across the front and one bay to the side, with a hip-and-gable roof that, viewed from the side, forms the shape of the Chinese character for "eight" (八). A plaque reading "Hongdomun" (弘道門, "Gate of Spreading the Way") hangs over the entrance, said to be written in King Sukjong's own hand.
