Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Pavilion of the Loyal Subject was built to honour the loyalty of Yun Yeo-ik (1548-1592), who served as a righteous-army soldier and died in the line of duty during the reign of King Seonjo of Joseon. Yun Yeo-ik was a disciple of Jo Heon (pen name Jungbong); when the Japanese invasions of 1592 broke out, he followed his teacher into the righteous army, distinguished himself in the recapture of Cheongju fortress, and died for his country in the Battle of Geumsan. The pavilion, built in 1883, the 20th year of Emperor Gojong, to honour his loyalty, is a single-bay by single-bay structure, 2.3 m across the front and 2.0 m deep, with a double-eaved hip-and-gable roof. The roof timbers are those used at the time of original construction, but the base stones and column plinths were rebuilt in concrete when the building was relocated and raised. Inside hang a plaque recording the grant of the royal memorial gate to Yun Yeo-ik, dated to the 19th day of the 8th month of 1883, and a further plaque recording his biography. In 1883 a royal memorial gate (jeongnyeo) was bestowed on him, and he was enshrined at Jo Jungbong Huyulsa Shrine, a Chungcheongbuk-do Monument. The pavilion stands opposite the village hall of Hanjung-ri, Maro-myeon, beside the local road leading toward Sangju. A wall runs around the pavilion along the boundary of the lot, with a separate gate set into the outer perimeter. The pavilion originally stood nearby but was relocated to its present site in the 1980s after its original location was included in the area to be submerged during the construction of a reservoir. Although the Yun Yeo-ik Chungsingak Pavilion, Boeun, was built in the late Joseon period and has been relocated once, in the 1980s, the figure it commemorates was one of the region's leading righteous-army commanders during the Japanese invasions of 1592-98, and the plaques recording the original royal memorial grant and his biography remain preserved in their original form inside the building. It is therefore appropriate to designate and protect it as cultural heritage.
