Records state that Beopcheonsa Temple was founded by Wonmyeong, a monk of the Yuan dynasty, while other records state that it was founded in 725, the twenty-fourth year of Silla's King Seongdeok, by Jeongmyeong, a monk from the state of Geumjiguk in the Western Regions, and later rebuilt by Wonmyeong, a monk of Imcheonsa Temple in Southern Song China. It is therefore difficult to establish precisely when the temple was built. Moguam, a hermitage affiliated with Beopcheonsa, is said to have been built by Wonmyeong, a monk of the Yuan dynasty. Moguam today comprises a main hall, monks' quarters and Chukseonggak Hall. Inside the main hall is a wooden Amitabha Buddha triad, in front of which stands a stone lantern made in 1681, the seventh year of King Sukjong, and at the entrance to Moguam stand five stupas, funerary monuments for monks, made in the late Joseon period.
