In 1281, the seventh year of King Chungnyeol of Goryeo, after Emperor Shizu (Kublai Khan) of Yuan China failed in two expeditions against Japan, he stationed troops at Hwanjusan Mountain (now the area of Chusan Park in Mahappo-gu, Changwon) in the tenth month of that year and established a military garrison there. Monggojeong is presumed to be a well dug to supply drinking water to the troops stationed here. The stone marker inscribed "Monggojeong" in front of the well was erected in 1932 by a Japanese antiquities preservation society; before that, the well is said to have been called Goryeojeong (Goryeo Well).
