This Maitreya Buddha, located in Yeonsan-myeon, Nonsan-si, South Chungcheong Province, was originally an image enshrined at Seokbulsa Temple, which burned down during the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592–1598). The present name Songburam, meaning Pine Buddha Hermitage, derives from the old pine tree standing right beside the Buddha, whose branches spread out like a roof in harmony with the statue. The robe draped over both shoulders forms a U-shape at the chest, and the folds of its hem are carved in shallow lines reaching down to the ankles. The left hand is held against the chest, while the right hand rests against the side of the body. The statue is presumed to have been made sometime between the late Goryeo and early Joseon periods.
