Gogoksanseong is a mountain fortress located in Gogok-ri, Namji-eup, Changnyeong-gun, South Gyeongsang Province; it runs along the ridge at about six-tenths height on the eastern side of the mountain, curving to the west and south to form an oval shape. The walls were built of stone mixed with earth and have a trapezoidal cross-section. The overall shape survives, but many sections have collapsed. Given that this area once belonged to the territory of ancient Gaya, and judging from the construction method of the wall, the fortress is presumed to have been built during the Gaya period; it is said to have been rebuilt during the Imjin War, in 1592, the twenty-fifth year of King Seonjo of Joseon, by General Gwak Jae-u (pen name Mangudang) to repel the invading Japanese forces. It was also the site of fierce fighting during the Korean War in 1950. In 2002, its name was changed from Gujinsanseong to Gogoksanseong.
